Outfits & Jewellery Inspirations To Steal From Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi
Heeramandi Outfits That Left Us Enchanted
Designers Rimple and Harpreet brought in their ace game with the entire collection of Heeramandi. From elaborate ghararas, shararas, lehengas and sultry cocktail sarees, the designer duo left no stone unturned.
The designer-duo, over the span of two years, designed over 300 costumes for more than 15 characters portrayed by the likes of Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Shekhar Suman, and Fardeen Khan.
The women of Heeramandi are seen wearing elaborate Ghararas and Shararas, brocade Lehengas, glittering Saris, and regal Anarkalis. Meanwhile, the men look dapper in traditional Kurta Pajamas, Sherwanis, Bandhgalas, and Rumi Topis as well as modern suits, jackets, and cravats marking the British influence among the aristocratic class.
For Heeramandi’s costumes, they used traditional techniques of zardozi, gota-patti, and hand-block printing. In fact, to make garments historically accurate, they referred to old paintings of tawaifs, and vintage photographs from the Calico Museum in Ahmedabad and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The designers also studied the fashion of yesteryear Indian singers and actors like Suraiya Jamal Sheikh, Noor Jehan, and Shamshad Begum.
Their outfits showcase the accurate blend of how the Nawabi and Sikh cultures were mixed with British and European influences over the years. These intertwined aesthetics are evident in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, with costumes that range from the Lucknowi Chatapati or Tukri Ghararas to floor-skimming Farshi Ghararas, Jamawar shawls and delicate French lace saris.
Also, as hand-painted fabrics were highly valued in those times, the Rimple and Harpreet also used chintz and French prints, for which they referenced old handprinted English and French book covers and prints.

Jewellery From Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi Has Us Swooning!
Made exclusively by Shri Parimani Jewels, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi showed us what royalty looks like. The jewellery designer brand worked closely with Bhansali and made more than 10,000 pieces of jewellery. Inspired by Mughal design, Passa, Tika, and Nath, necklaces and earrings were painstakingly handcrafted for each character using real rubies, emeralds, pearls, and Polki diamonds. The entire jewellery range oozes regal-ness and the maker of the jewellery reveals they took 3 years to make.
Diving deep into the Mughal era and taking inspiration from the same, the jewellery features complex filigree work, embedded with precious stones like diamonds, emeralds, and rubies, reflecting the opulence of the era. These pieces include motifs such as flowers, birds, and geometric patterns, which are painstakingly crafted to represent the height of artisan skill during the Mughal period.
